Cedar fences are some of the most beautiful residential fences on the market. Some homeowners love the gorgeous rich red color that they are initially installed with, while others like the charming weathered gray that they fade to. Regardless of your preference, there are many simple ways to maintain your cedar fence and keep it looking great throughout the year.
Inspect Your Cedar Fence
Take a walk around your fence to see if you can spot any damage on the perimeter. Make a habit of doing this at least seasonally, as well as after any big weather events or storms. Look for signs of damage up close including staining around nails or screws, cracked portions, rotting, dirty patches, or dull patches. Make a list as you go of spots to repair so that you don’t forget anything.
Cleaning
Wash the length of your fence with a pressure washer at a low pressure. Use a 15 or 25 degree spray tip. Pick a warm sunny day (so that the moisture doesn’t sit for too long) and spray the fence with the tip about 18 inches from the surface. Slowly move the spraying wand across the board and watch as extra dirt and grime is washed away!
Repairing
If there was staining around any nails or screws, remove them from the fence and clean the surrounding stained area. Replace them with brand new non-corrosive nails made from stainless steel, aluminum, or galvanized steel. If you have any damaged boards that are suffering from cracking or rotting, remove and replace them immediately before the damage starts to spread. Don’t worry about new boards not matching the rest-as long as you properly stain the board or let it fade to match the rest of your fence, you’ll be fine.
