Stain or Paint Your Deck a Cool Color
Do you have a wood deck? Paint or stain it a light color. You could paint it white, light gray, tan, or another cool color. Reflecting the light will keep its surface and you cool. If you have a vinyl or composite deck, then it will be cooler if it is already white or another light color. If your deck is a darker color and you don’t want to change it, you can opt to put down a light-colored outdoor rug.
Add Shade
Shade instantly cools an area down. You can add shade to your backyard deck in different ways. For instance, a pergola adds filtered shade, but a gazebo or pavilion will give you a solid roof overhead. Meanwhile, screened porches make you feel more like you are in an indoor room but still give you access to the outdoor air without the bugs!
