June to November is hurricane season here on the Atlantic Coast, and this year has been no exception. Is your deck prepared for hurricane season? Is your fencing prepared? Here are three tips for making sure your investment lasts for many years to come!
Clear Away the Debris
The second most common damage from hurricanes is caused by loose debris like branches. Make sure to prune the trees around your home and fences, and remove dead branches well before the hurricane shows up. Make sure to remove any patio furniture and other loose items outside that can get blown around.
Keep Your Gutters Clean
Gutters and irrigation should always be monitored and kept clean, but it’s especially important during storm season. Often irrigation and drainage lines run along the edges of your property, in the same places your fencing does. Your gutters run all around the edge of your home, including near or around your deck. It’s particularly important to make sure nothing blocks flowing water during a storm. If you are not vigilant about keep your drainage lines clear, water can back up and caught water damage or rot in key areas of your fencing and decking.
Waterproof Your Wood
The last step to getting your deck and fences ready for hurricane season is waterproofing. Most waterproofing solutions come in the form of a sealant and is applied with a brush or pad. Waterproofing will help you save money in the long run, as it will help prevent mold and water damage from not just the hurricane but also prolonged outdoor exposure. Make sure to invest in a professional waterproofing job, to get the most out of your money.
