If you’re going the sealing route to protect your fence from winter weather, you’ll have a number of options to choose from. This article describes the different kinds of sealers you can use.
Wax-based sealers
These are the cheapest options. However, they only last for about eight months before you have to strip them and do it again. They can also blacken the wood.
Crude oil-based sealers
Though these are easy to strip, you really don’t have to and can apply new layers directly on top of old layers. They’re best for maintaining the natural look of the wood.
Vegetable oil-based sealers
These sealers give wood a shiny, varnished look. However, they are susceptible to mold and mildew growth and are difficult to remove. Either oil-based sealer will last 12 to 18 months.
