How to Clean Your Backyard Deck
Clear Everything Off
It might be very cumbersome to remove very heavy objects off your deck, like a fire pit or a hot tub, but your deck will thank you for cleaning it as thoroughly as possible. If possible, clear everything off the deck before you begin.
Hose It Down
Next, hose down the entire deck. Your garden hose should be good enough. It is good to wet the deck first just like you would when washing the dishes or anything else. As you clean the deck, hose the deck again as necessary so the detergent can work properly.
Scrub
Next, it’s time to clean the deck! You can use a mix of warm water and dish detergent, a commercial deck cleaner, or another homemade solution. One homemade solution is to mix 2 gallons of warm water, 2 cups of Oxi Clean, and a quarter cup of dish detergent.
Use a scrub brush with a handle and some elbow grease to work the wet solution into the deck boards. This method works for any kind of deck. Allow the deck to sit for at least 15 minutes before hosing the deck clean.
Stain (If Applicable)
If you have a wood deck, allow the deck to dry overnight. Blow off any debris on the deck before applying the stain with a paint roller or pad with a long handle over the entire surface. Once dry, take your time to coat the deck railing and steps as well.

Once the deck is fully ready, you can replace your deck furnishings and consider adding something new. Consider adding some seating, shade, a grill, and planters. Make it even homier with an outdoor rug, deck lights, and other decorations of your choice. Enjoy your clean deck this summer!
