Do you need a permit for a fence? Learn all about it here.

There are more ins and outs about installing a new structure on your residential property in central Maryland than you might think. Different details will make the difference for your home, and one of those details is acquiring permits. Do you need a permit for a fence or any other exterior residential structure? What else is there to know? We’ll walk you through below.

Do You Need a Permit for a Fence?

On Anne Arundel County’s website, you can find a list of permits required for different installations. For a fence, you will need a Residential Accessory Structure permit. You may need an additional permit if the fence is over 6 feet tall. If you don’t know the property boundary, you need a surveyor to confirm it before installing the fence.

Do You Need a Permit for a Deck?

AA County also requires a Residential Single Family Dwelling permit for a new deck installation. Those applying for a deck permit outside of a Critical Area, a location within 1,000 feet of a body of water, can expect their application to be reviewed the same day. There also may be residential setback requirements for your deck, such as that it must reach no farther than 3 feet from the property line.

Do You Need a Permit for a Pergola?

A gazebo, pavilion, or pergola needs a Residential Accessory Structure permit to pass before starting work. It is a freestanding structure or attached to a deck, patio, or home.

Do You Need a Permit for a Screened Porch?

A screened porch might need a permit to install; the county requires a Residential Single Family Dwelling permit for a porch installation, so it may cover screened-in porches as well. Plan your screened porch diligently to ensure it does not block views, significant natural light, or access to your home.

Do You Need a Permit for a Hot Tub

A hot tub is a place that is hard to leave, but if you want one on your property, you likely already know. You will need a Residential Accessory Structure permit to make it a reality.

Getting It Done with the Right Contractor
