Pavilions or pergolas: which do you prefer?

Pavilions (also called pagodas) and pergolas are two different but similar outdoor features that grace multiple homes, commercial properties, and public lands in Maryland. In the question of pavilion vs. pergola, Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence is here to help you see the different characteristics of each and make an informed decision. If you have any questions, would like to visit our Gambrills showroom, or would like a free quote, we are waiting expectantly!

Pavilions

Pavilions are outdoor shade structures with a solid roof supported by columns. The roof is usually pyramidal in nature and may or may not include a cupola or ceiling fan for ventilation. At minimum, a pavilion will have four supporting columns, but it could have more if it is rectangular. At the base, the pavilion usually sits on a concrete or other kind of patio.

Pavilions/pagodas are popular features for public and commercial properties designed to support outdoor venues like picnics, raffles, and more. Their solid roofs and accessibility from all sides make them highly practical for hosting large groups.

For residential properties, pavilions are excellent for providing total shade overhead while maintaining accessibility on all sides. They fit well on a backyard deck, in a garden, on a lawn, or beside your swimming pool

Pergolas

Pergolas are flexible outdoor shade features that have slats and joists for roofing, creating an open roof that filters light throughout the day. Unlike pagodas, they do not need any supporting columns at all to count as pergolas. They could attach from your house to shade an exterior entrance or shade a walkway. They could create an arch over the edge of a deck or patio seating area. Yet another design is the typical one, a shade structure that covers the entirety of an outdoor living area and is supported by at least three columns.

As you can see, pergolas have many applications for adding shade to your property. Our vinyl pergolas are made to stand the test of time. If you would like the filtered light that pergolas offer but with a solid roof, it is possible to add clear panels over the pergola.
