Screened Porch vs. Three Season Room

Is a screened porch or a three season room right for your home?

An enclosed outdoor living space might be more appealing to some than just an open patio or deck. If you burn easily or want to avoid heatstroke and the rain, then a shelter overhead is a must. You can have different levels of shelter, from a mere outdoor umbrella to a pergola to an indoor-outdoor room. There are two kinds of the latter, but people often mix them up. Screened porch vs. three season room: what’s the difference and which is for you?

What Is a Screened Porch?

A screened porch is an uninsulated room that does not share the home’s heating and cooling. It has large wrap-around windows and an equally transparent door. It can be attached or detached from a house.

A screened porch’s windows only have mesh wire screens; the room is continually open to the outside air. This mesh is usually made of aluminum, fiberglass, or nylon. It is in all respects outdoors, except that you have a solid roof overhead, the structure of a room around you, and freedom from pesky bugs.

What Is a Three Season Room?

A three season room is just like a screened porch, except that the windows are solid vinyl glazing. This slightly stretchy, durable window film is completely transparent and is much lighter and more affordable than glass. Tinted versions are available. Like screened porches, they can be attached or detached from the house and are not insulated. Three season rooms provide the comfort of a shelter against heat, wind, bugs, and rain while filling the space with as much sunlight as possible.

Which Is Best for You?

In the screened porch vs. three season room debate, it is important to note their similarities as well as their differences. They both are indoor-outdoor rooms that you can use for multiple purposes, such as entertaining, relaxing, or working on a hobby. You can even make it a guest bedroom. The main difference is that one protects you from wind while the other lets you get fresh air and enjoy a breeze. Common appliances for heating and cooling these rooms include ceiling fans, outdoor fireplaces, and portable heaters or air conditioners.

Of course, there’s also the comparative cost to consider. See what the costs would be with Mid-Atlantic Deck & Fence in Gambrills, MD!
