Testimonials From Annapolis Customers
“The entire experience was pleasant and easy. I chose Mid-Atlantic because of the positive reviews from others in my neighborhood. I met with Dave and we discussed deck design and he listened to my wants and needs. I mentioned “pleasant” because Dave didn’t try to sell me on the most expensive materials or state a “limited-time only” sales pitch. He provided several options within my budget, provided literature on the materials and invited me to their showroom to see the products up close. The deck was exactly what I wanted and within budget. Also, the installers promptly cleaned up and removed the debris upon completion. For a hassle-free experience, I would definitely recommend Mid-Atlantic.” -Eric
“This company did a very good job in constructing my deck at my new home. They were fast and professional. My deck was a large one and they still it in 3 days as per my contract. I was amazed and still speechless how quick they did the deck. I would definitely recommend Mid Atlantic Deck & Fence to everyone. Keep up the great work guys.” -Tyrone
Deck Materials
Wood Decks
Wood decks are still one of the most popular materials used in new decks today. Not only does a new wood deck add value to your home, but it’s also an extension of your home’s personality and lifestyle. Pressure-treated wood decking is still one of the most affordable types of wood material used in deck building today. However, many other wood decking material options are available, such as Brazilian hardwood, western red cedar, and tiger wood decking.
Low-Maintenance Composite Decks
There are three basic levels of low-maintenance composite decking. The first option, and usually the least expensive, is 100% composite decking products, a conglomeration of wood and plastic mixed to create the decking plank. The second option is cap stock decking, a blend of composite core material with a plastic or PVC cap stock surrounding the composite core. Lastly, there are PVC-based decking options. They have no wood filler, are usually more dimensionally stable, and tend to generate less heat.

Deck Railings
Hundreds of designs, material options, and styles are available for deck railings. The most popular railing material used today is vinyl. Vinyl railings are offered in several colors and have various baluster options. About 70% of all the deck railings that we install are vinyl. We installed so many vinyl railings on our projects that we started manufacturing them ourselves.
Aluminum and steel railings are becoming increasingly popular and can create a nice look for your deck project. However, they can get expensive quickly, but they truly provide a unique and elegant look. Glass railings provide an unobstructed view but require a little more maintenance because the glass attracts more fingerprints and dirt. But they look great if you want to spend a little time on them.
Cable railing is generally installed on wood or vinyl posts and fabricated using stainless steel cables and fasteners. It offers an unobstructed view and requires little maintenance. Cable railings are on the upper end of the price range but can truly set your deck apart.
Keep in mind that all counties and municipalities have different requirements for deck railings, so check with your local zoning officials to ensure the railing meets those requirements.

You can view more of our FAQs here. Some of our client’s most pressing questions include the following:
Do I need a permit to build my deck?
If you are building a new deck on your home, you must have a county permit if the new deck is more than 12″ above grade. If the deck is less than 12″ above grade, you are not required to have a county permit because it is considered a patio and not a deck. Always check with your local permit and inspection office, as these codes change occasionally.
How do I get a permit for my project?
Generally, you will need a copy of your property plan that clearly shows the house and its location in conjunction with the property lines. Indicate the plan for where the new deck will be installed. You will also need a drawing of the deck to scale that clearly shows the deck’s dimensions, footer size and depth, beam size, joist size and spacing, decking material to be used, railing system, and staircase location, if any. Make sure you stay within any setback requirements and building restriction lines, which should be marked on your property plan when you design your new deck.
Should my contractor be licensed?
Yes, any contractor in the state of Maryland is required to have a Maryland State Home Improvement License (NOT A CONTRACTORS LICENSE) to install any decking in Maryland. They should also carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation so you and your contractor are protected from any liability. Any licensed home improvement contractor should gladly provide you with a copy of their home improvement license and a certificate of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance upon your request.
